Hemodialysis Technician Program (Dialysis Technician)

This course will prepare students to work as dialysis technicians in hospital-based and free-standing dialysis units. Students completing the course will be prepared to sit for a national dialysis technician certification exam. Preparation of a hemodialysis machine and patient access for dialysis treatment will be reviewed. Students will be taught dialysis measures, how to cannulate Arterial/Venous Grafts and Arterial/Venous Fistula’s, and to initiate and terminate treatment with central venous catheter access. Procurement of specimens from patients for routine and dialysis-related laboratory diagnostic tests, and proper water specimen collection will be illustrated. Patient comfort measures and the recording of patient vital signs will be covered. There will be discussion of how to recognize problems related to dialysis treatment and actions taken by dialysis staff in response to any problems or reactions.
